8 Years of Tradition Ends
After 8 years, under the Obama administration, the White House fails to acknowledge June as Pride Month under Trump. Declining to issue a proclamation announcing Pride Month, President Trump breaks from tradition.
Democrats proclaim Pride Month and criticized the GOP for ignoring the LGBT community. Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader said, “Tremendous progress has been achieved, but the journey is far from over. LGBT Americans face an assault on their rights from the White House and House Republicans, who are gutting HIV prevention and treatment initiatives, dismantling protections for transgender children in public schools and conspiring to render LGBT Americans invisible in the census.”
From the Advocate: Despite his campaign pledges to be a friend to the LGBT community, Trump’s administration has shown open hostility to the rights of LGBT Americans. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos yanked back historic guidance that clarified the rights of transgender students. President Trump nominated an Army secretary who once said transgender people have a “disease.” In the face of horrific violence against men believed to be gay in Chechnya, the Trump administration has been mostly feckless. And where we previously had many out and proud LGBT appointees across the federal government, we now have far-right and alt-right social conservatives who are systematically gutting the policies and protections LGBT people rely on.
Not Having It
Some media outlets have reported that a proclamation may still be made, but it’s too late for most. However, according to Politico, the Pentagon will hold it’s Pride celebration on June 12 .
Ivanka Trump issued a statement on Twitter, but most people aren’t having it. Congratulating the LGBT community on Pride Month, the consensus in the community is “Were sick of being used as a prop”.
